Scotland '19

Introduction

In June 2019 I was to head to Brussels, Belgium, to present a website, so I decided to continue to Scotland, as I was "halfway". ;-) Trip started on 22nd in Stockholm, Sweden, via ferry from Gothenburg, Sweden, to Kiel, Germany, and then on to Leuven and Brussels, Belgium. Then on to Ijmuiden, Holland, to catch the ferry to Newcastle, UK.

Return trip was done via same ferry route and then through Holland into Germany and through Denmark to Båstad, Sweden, to visit family and then home to Stockholm.

I took about 1140 photos with my Canon EOS 100D and Nikon W100 (in wet weather).

Stockholm to Brussels

Leaving Gothenburg (22nd), the ferry passed by Älvsborgs fortress.

From Kiel (23rd) I went to Leuven, Belgium, and then on to Brussels to tour town and meet up with colleagues (24th and 25th).

Brussels to Cupar

From Brussels (26th), trip continued to Holland and up its coast up to Ijmuiden to catch ferry to Newcastle, UK.

Three Forth Bridges

Well in Newcastle (27th), trip led to Cupar, Fife, Scotland, for a stay at aunt and uncle, via Cairnpapple Hill, Bathgate, and the burial mound, and then over Queensferry Crossing (the newest bridge over Firth of Forth).

A trip was done to Tentsmuir nature reserve (28th) and on to St. Andrews, which was viewed by foot, and further on to Crail, also viewed by foot.

Short trips to Leven and Fife Heritage Railway was done (2nd), while also looking for a plank for a bed, and to Cairnie Fruit Farm for the obligatory strawberry tart (?; can't remember if I had one this year though...).

Cupar to Newtonmore

Headed to Newtyle (4th) to visit Granny's grave and then to Glen Prosen, home of my Grandfather's family, to stay a night at Prosen Hostel in the old school house.

Next was Pitlochry (5th & 6th) and a climb of Ben-y-Vrackie and a visit to Queen's View, overlooking Loch Tummel and Shiehallion.

Heading North (7th) to Newtonmore and a visit to Highland Folk Museum, which had added some new buildings since last visit (7 years previous), and a walk to enjoy evening light on mountains.

Newtonmore to Roy Bridge

After a stop at Ruthven Barracks, I headed West (8th) to Roybridge, Fort William and Glen Nevis, a too crowded Glenfinnan and Banavie, doing some trainspotting when Jacobite Express passed.

A rainy afternoon (9th) was spent in Glen Roy, enjoying the parallel roads.

Climbed Ben Nevis (10th) via "Tourist path" to the trig point. Unfortunately, the top of Ben Nevis is often in the clouds, as it was this day. :-(

Headed up (a wet) Glen Nevis and on to Glenfinnan, and its viaduct, for some photography (11th).

Roy Bridge to Glasgow

Visited Cille Choirill Church before heading South (12th) via Glen Coe, Tyndrum and Loch Lomond, arriving in Dumbarton and its castle.

Glasgow was toured (13th) by bus and foot, visiting Glasgow Necropolis, town centre, Riverside Museum, Kelvingrove, and Partick.

Glasgow to Newcastle

Last night was spent in (and at) Seaton Sluice (14th), visiting Bamburgh, Whitley Bay and Blyth, before leaving Newcastle (15th) for Ijmuiden, Holland.

Newcastle to Stockholm

“Backroads” were taken from Ijmuiden to Kremperheide, Germany, trying to avoid Autobahns. Leaving Kremperheide (17th) for Denmark and Båstad, Sweden.

A walk up to Axelstorp was done (18th), as well as a look at Hemmeslöv's new houses (19th) and upper Båstad (20th), before heading back to Stockholm (21st).
